12:45pm - 2:45pm

Dancing from the Heart: Kandice Emotive Movement

I’ve just wrapped up editing all the performances from Cirque du Beledi: Hafla 2009

You can find them all here on my YouTube page:

http://www.youtube.com/user/violinbunny

If for any reason you’d like yours removed, please let me know ASAP and I’ll take it down for you. Also, I’m hoping I got everyone’s names spelled correctly. If not please let me know and I’ll go in and change it.

There were a total of 14 performances in the Hafla and I’ve edited each one down to the individual performances. However, there was one duet between two women to the “Low Rider” song and I haven’t been able to track down their names. If you know their names please pass them on to me and I’ll put there video clip up ASAP.

Hope you enjoy being able to go back and watch them again. I know I do, you were all fantastic!

Hugs and Shimmies,

Less than 2 weeks left until the Kansas City stop of the Durga Tour, featuring Tempest!

Join us on Tuesday evening, June 2nd for 3 HOURS with Tempest at the Matt Ross Community Center in Overland Park, KS. Workshop schedule for that evening will be as follows:

5:30p-6:30p - REGISTRATION/CHECK-IN & SHOPPING*

6:30p-8:00p - DRAMATIC BODY LANGUAGE: At the heart of Gothic Belly Dance is the ability to express deep emotions through the dance in a dramatic style. While in theory, this makes sense, understanding how to make this happen physically is another matter. How does one go about transferring matters of the heart, mind, and spirit into a corporeal expression? In this workshop, we learn to take regular belly dance movements and add Gothic accents to them, focusing on expressing emotion, intent, and power through our steps and presence. From facial expression to fingertips, we’ll be dissecting the accents that give Gothic Belly Dance extra substance, drama, and excitement. You’ll take home movement embellishments and flourishes to incorporate into your own style. This class is especially for any dancer who is ready to perform or is considering it.

8:00p-8:15p - BREAK

8:15p-9:45p - THE FABULOUS FORBIDDEN ART OF FLOORWORK: Floorwork is looked down upon in some areas of bellydance due to cultural issues and connotations – and is actually quite physically difficult to perform well – hence it’s become somewhat of a lost art in many communities. Discover an amazing and dramatic realm that can add a new level to your dance. Learn new twists on classic moves, plus all new gothic combinations. We’ll cover important keys for a strong floorwork performance inside and out. Students should bring knee pads or a yoga mat to work on. Recommended for intermediate level and above dancers.

* * * * * * * * * * *

WORKSHOP FEES: One workshop for $25, or both workshops for $40!

Go to http://belliphat.com/workshops.html now to register & reserve your spot!

* * * * * * * * * * *

SIDE NOTE --- if you have mailed in your registration, please PM me. I moved recently, and some of the OLDER flyers have my old address on them. Mail is being forwarded, but it does cause a delay & I don't want anyone to be left out! :)

So, if anyone's interested, send her an e-mail.

Her prices vary, but the minimum package (she's billing it as a "recession package") is $250 for the sitting fee and $250-295 for retouched photos. The minimum package is only a 90 minute session but does include hair and makeup.

I've been toying with the idea of doing this before I turn 50 next year, and have shopped around a bit for prices. For the quality and the price, this sounded like a good deal to me.

Ok, thought I'd post the details of where we are, for inquiring minds who want to know... :)

I have stepped up to sponsor the Kansas City stop of the Durga Tour: http://www.meddevi.com/durga/stops.html The event is slated for Tuesday, June 2nd, and due to it being a weekday, we're going to have the workshops be in the evening (after everyone gets off of work). I am leaning toward offering 2 90-minute workshops by Tempest, so that we can offer as much variety to as many people who are interested as possible.

The workshop will be presented at the Matt Ross (Overland Park) Community Center: http://www.opkansas.org/Contact_Us/Directions_and_Maps/matt_ross.cfm I am trying to keep it as centrally-located as possible, so that everyone can get there in a reasonable amount of time after their day job.

As soon as I have the contract signed with Tempest, I will be putting up the workshop registration information on my website: http://belliphat.com/workshops.html Regsitration will be available via Paypal or mail-in check/money order. I will also post here when that is ready/available.

Feel free to let me know if anyone has any questions at this point! Thanks everyone for your interest & willingness to help! I'll let ya know if I need anything... Otherwise, looking forward to seeing everyone there! :)
what.a.mouthful

So, having a general curiousity about re-taking ballet (it's seriously been 18 years since) but not really having the...motivation?...to take a full out ballet class, I started talking to my friend Charlie, who dances for and choreographs for both Quixotic and the KC Ballet, about trading for private lessons - which quickly evolved into me asking his interest in teaching a 2 hour Ballet for Bellydance mini-workshop. Being that Charlie is dating a bellydancer, he was totally into it (and probably has some excellent insight), so I thought I might ask and see who else might be interested. Probably 30$ for a two hour class focusing on footwork, positions, posture, and ballet basics.

So, would anyone be interested?
I was thinking mid-July, so as to not interfere with any of the otehr stuff that's going on....

Sought after for her concise instruction, Asharah teaches belly dance around the world. She is highly regarded for her emphasis on clean technique as well as the individual attention she pays each student in each of her classes and workshops. She believes in addressing each student as an individual, highlighting their strengths and identifying areas of improvement.

Asharah will bring the following workshops to St. Louis:

Saturday June 27th - 10 am until noon

Pops, Locks, and Tick Tocks: Tricks to Mechanize your Movement
Experience Level: Intermediate beginner and above.

Inspired by robots, experimental electronic music, and poppin’ and lockin’, Asharah has integrated mechanical movements into her expressive tribal fusion performances. In this workshop, Asharah will lead students through an intense warm up and then will show students how to break down traditional bellydance movements such as vertical hip figure-8s, shoulder rolls, torso undulations, turns, and arm waves into smaller and sharper parts to give your performances a robotic and creepy edge. After drilling these movements, she’ll teach a short combination that demonstrates how these movements can be used in a performance. She’ll also briefly discuss concepts of electronic music, how it is created, and how to listen to the nuances of music made by machines and computers.

Saturday June 27th - 1pm until 3pm

Dancing Your Demons: Dramatic Dance through Emotional Expression (This workshop is SOLD OUT at Tribal Fest 09!!)
Experience Level: Intermediate beginner and above.

Within each one of us is our true, instinctual self, and we often ignore or repress her (or him) in our everyday lives. Our instinctual self is not rational, and yet to dance to our fullest, we must acknowledge our instinct, acting upon it without second-guessing it and while still harnessing it for a clean and stage-worthy performance. Our instincts are raw, untamed and absolutely essential to a dancer who wishes to give a moving and expressive performance.

In this workshop, Asharah will lead students through physical exercises aimed at drawing out instinctual responses to music and other students in class. She will also explain her own emotional preparation process, giving guidelines and tips on how to be “in the moment” before you even take the stage. Students must leave their egos at the door, and judgmental or critical behavior will not be tolerated.

Sunday, June 28th - 10 am until noon

Progressive Raqs*: Technical Bellydance with a Geeky Twist
Experience Level: Intermediate beginner and above.

In this workshop, Asharah will teach some of her signature technical movements while emphasizing grace, fluidity, power, and presence. A self-described geek, she’ll explain the muscles and physiology behind each movement and how each movement can fit in to the larger picture of your dance. She’ll also talk about her sense of artistic and creative integrity, giving you advice and tips for pursuing your own uncompromising path as an artist and dancer. Asharah likes to push herself and her students physically and mentally, so come prepared with water and an open mind.
Reed Watkins of Kansas City, Missouri

Reed Watkins of Kansas City has been studying sword since 1979. He will give a mini workshop on how to incorporate Chinese, Japanese and European sword maneuvering into your belly dance repertoire. Reed has been belly dancing since 2004 so he knows how to work the sword. I have taken Reed's workshops and have seen him perform...he is incredible!! Audiences always enjoy his dynamic martial arts belly dance fusion performances. He will show you that a sword is more than something to balance.

Reed gives sword dancing a realistic flavor by teaching how swords are used in combative situations. When he dances his martial arts training is evident. Reed makes the sword flow gracefully with the dance. This is not a Tahtib class. It will cover Eastern and Western sword techniques.

Saturday June 27th – 3:15pm – 4:45pm
Sword Maneuvering 101 – Fusion Style!!
Experience Level: Intermediate to advanced.

Reed will be teaching traditional sword cuts, stances, and maneuvering from Chinese, Japanese, and European sword schools. Be prepared to drill!! He will incorporate fluid martial arts moves used with sword and belly dance. You may want to do some upper body strengthening prior to the workshop. Practice swords will be available.

Workshop Fee - $25
This price is good until May 15th. May 16th the cost will increase to $35.

**************************************************************

Nichelle Lawrence will be here as well to shoot the show. She will also be available for mini shoots (by appointment please). Nichelle has offered to set up a photo booth for your convenience. http://lifephotographybynichelle.com

**************************************************************

Inanna's Home Studio

Back by popular demand. We're continuing our several-years-long tradition of hosting what is now the annual Winter Holiday Hafla.

We always have too much food, because everyone's more interested in drumming and dancing than eating. I will have a few munchies and some non-alcoholic beverages. If there is something in particular that you would like to eat or drink and the spirit moves you to bring it ... feel free to do so.

You can find us at 841 NE Barnes Ave.; Village of Oaks, Missouri 64118.

We're easy to find, near the major intersection of N. Oak Trafficway and Englewood Road north of the river in the KC Metro area. If you require directions or have questions, our phone is (816) 453-7122.

Also -- I spoke with M'Chelle about what we needed to do to raise funds to bring Kaeshi of Bellyqueen and her drummer to Kansas City, so they can teach us the dances and rhythms we need to know to have an official chapter of PURE (Public Urban Ritual Experience).

The Floating Haflas will always be free of charge for any drummers and dancers who would like to attend.

However, we will have a free-love-offering jar out for people who wish to contribute to PURE's efforts to raise enough money to bring Kaeshi to town. So if you feel the urge to donate a dollar or two (or more) to the cause at the Holiday Hafla, we would welcome your contribution.

Kahraman Near East Dance Ensemble will be hosting both Part 1 & Part 2 of Sahra Saeeda's Journey Through Egypt in Iowa City, Iowa in the near future. Part 1 is primarily a lecture/video workshop, with some dance/movement involved, on the historical and cultural foundations. Part 2 is much more focused on dance technique and movement. Each attendee receives a notebook, a DVD, and a certificate of completion.

Sahra holds a Master's Degree in dance ethnology, and did her master's degree thesis work in Egypt. She also worked in 5-star nightclubs in Egypt as a professional dancer. The Journey Through Egypt workshops package the results of her research into a workshop format.

If you're interested in coming, register early, because when we offered Part 1 here in July it sold out a month ahead of time. That's why we're offering it again, along with offering Part 2.

We will accept a maximum of 25 registrations for Part 1, and a maximum of 20 registrations for Part 2. (Sahra requested a smaller class size for Part 2.)

Part 1 will be January 6-8, 2009. Here's a link to the event listing here on tribe.net: http://iowa.tribe.net/event/Sahras-folkloric-intensive-Part-1-in-Iowa-City-Iowa/iowa-city-ia-52240/0a51e45b-8a39-4fb5-8684-97b2462824d6

Part 2 will be January 9-11, 2009. Sahra requires that people complete Part 1 before taking Part 2, but it's okay if you took it somewhere other than Iowa City. Here's a link to the event listing here on tribe.net: http://iowa.tribe.net/event/Sahras-folkloric-intensive-Part-2-in-Iowa-City-Iowa/iowa-city-ia-52240/9eb22061-8dbc-4dc1-9dd3-15dd230e40ec
