If you're not familiar with PURE, check out their website: http://www.puredance.org/index.html

Here is the summary from their web site of what the organization is all about:

"PURE is collective of dancers and drummers who take music and dance out into the streets for the purposes of healing and peace. Movements from ancient sacred world traditions including Middle Eastern, Chinese, Romani gypsy, Israeli folk, Flamenco, Indian dance and drumming will be incorporated into the PURE experience.

"Dance and ritual create community, drawing people together both emotionally and physically into a shared sense of the divine. As the community participates, no one is a stranger any longer.

"Dancers and musicians will be travelling down the sidewalks and into subways and public spaces to share their love of dance and music with the public and to pay homage to specific sites.
"Visit http://pure-dance.tribe.net to participate in online discussions and to see more photos.

"PURE (Public Urban Ritual Experiment) is a sponsored project at "The Field", a not-for-profit, tax exempt, 501(c)(3) organization. Gifts made through that organization are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law."
Make Me Dance. That's the title of one of Setrak Sarkissian's old albums, and that's exactly what of the tracks made me do. This video was recorded after I'd been dancing a few years. I think it was about 1981 or 1982. Unfortunately, I never got a video of this old choreography of mine from a show. My husband shot this video one night while I was rehearsing at City in Motion's dance studio. Forgive the old-time movie sepia thing going on. At the time, we thought we were being artistic. :-)

We are planning on doing a bigger show for next year so more people can dance. So if you have any other suggestions fill free to PM me.

SHARON SAT, 10 - 1
#1
Weaving it Together: Technique-Focused Dance Combinations.

In this class we will not only work on honing our dance technique, we will put it to good use as we put those moves we have drilled ever so faithfully! We will learn and create some fun combinations that can be incorporated into your own repertoire, keeping strong muscular skill and alignment well in hand so the creative juices are free to flow! As we weave our moves into combos, we shall then weave the combos into a choreography to take with us! This class is fun and appropriate for all levels of Tribal-flavored dancer, and those new to Tribal Style are encouraged to give it a try. Some Bellydance experience is recommended. Please wear exercise-friendly clothes and bring something to tie around your hips!

KAMI, SAT 2 - 5
#2
Tribal Fusion Drills:

This class will largely focus on posture and technique. We will begin with basic drills and move onto more complex drills and then put these movements into short combinations. This class is great for beginners and an excellent review and workout for intermediate dancers.

KAMI, SUN 10 - 1
#3
Layering Tribal Fusion Movements with Control and Precision:

This class will begin with posture and technique drills, focusing on executing movements correctly and gaining muscle memory which is crucial in layering. We will continue by layering these movements on top of each other and eventually working towards layering 3 movements at a time. These moves will then be put into combinations and a short choreography will be introduced. All levels are welcome, beginning and advanced variations will be offered.

SHARON, SUN 2 - 5
#4
Tools of the Trade - A Breakdown of Advanced Moves for the Experienced Tribal Dancer:
This class is designed for the dedicated Bellydance student, and is suggested for dancers with several years of experience in Tribal Bellydance or Suhaila Salimpour technique. Here we will cover more advanced topics such as precise multi-layered movement, footwork, turning technique, floor work and preperation for backbends. Beginning and ending with a Yoga warm up and cool down, we will stretch and prepare the body, and each student will be encouraged and assisted in creating their own strengthening and conditioning routine to take home and practice each day, in order to help them meet their personal goals as a dancer. Bring a mat, a notebook and pen.

The website is www.laylabintali.com I think I spelled my name right this time. I'll be posting an event on tribe as well. Early registration is till March 15th. This year I've done things a little different. You have the choice to pay per class, all day, or all weekend. So you can make it to just one class or all of them.
I'm experimenting with a new show format. I would like to raise the public awareness of belly dance by hosting the show in a more public venue. This year the show will be at Davey's Uptown in their stage room. There will be no smoking in that room but there is smoking in the bar adjacent to the stage room. The show performances are limited to invitation only. This is not to be exclusionary in any way but to show case talent in this area a long with the teachers in the limited time we have on the stage. We are limited this year in time because we have to be done with the stage by 10:00p.m. I hope in the future if this is successful we can be in a larger public venue and have more time. It should be a great show and I'm looking forward to studying with all the talented teachers I have lined up for this year.

Robin and I are trying to book a three-week stay in a small, affordable vacation home on Gulf Coast Florida for relatives from Germany. There is a language barrier, and they are having trouble finding a place. Every place we've found online that is affordable is already booked. I think we need professional help. Any contacts would be most appreciated.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zucrbn6aGrM

The contraversey is whether Mel and Max should have won. They received the highest judges scores. However, I believe judge Carrie Ann (who scored Helio a 9 compared to Lynn and Bruno's 10s on the Free Style) made the perfect comment after Helio and Julianne's final Free Style performance. She said Helio had the combination of technique like Mel and entertainment like Marie. THAT'S what the fans saw as well. I think the only performance that I enjoyed where Helio wasn't smiling was the Paso Doble. But, his character was perfect.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kDfnp7UXoMQ

So, of course, now apply this information to belly dance and what you want to achieve for yourself as a dancer. I think I've said it many times, you can be as technically correct as you want, but if the entertainment and personality aren't there, you still don't have an audience winning performance.

Last night's episode of "Dancing With the Stars" revealed some musical interpretation issues on nearly every level. The first think I noticed last week was the difference in the musical quality since they now have a new musical director. The previous director had more zing, zip, pazzaz to his musical interpretation someone. Last night, all the songs seemed to drag and likewise the dance performances dragged right along with it. Likewise, the judges scoring basically reflected the same nearly across the board. I don't believe it was that much entirely the dancer's fault, rather their dancing to the music.

Secondly, there was a clash in generations in musical interpretations. Again, it was in the Tango. The younger generation tended to lean towards contemporary tango music which, like last year (Apolo and Julianna), garnished lower scores from the judges who couldn't "see" the Tango with the music. I think this is very much in play now on the belly dance scene with the fusion mixes that is now coming out. We old timers love our traditional Middle Eastern pieces where the newbies like the new techno/fusion pieces.

This is a good example of how you need to find the music that works for YOU and what you're trying to convey in your dance. And, honestly, there is no right or wrong. Just know there is all styles and taste out there, and none of US are in a dance competition, thank goodness. It's best not to compare yourself to anyone else in this dance form, but be comfortable in developing your own "look" within a style or styles even. There are many cross-over dancers and I think it's great!

But, to me, music, music, music makes or breaks the dancer and dance performance. I hope the other music director returns to "Dancing With The Stars" soon, or this one learns to put more zing into his directing.

These dancers were incredible! And the SILK! OMG THE SILK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And the live drumming! And the dancing! If they're still touring around here a bit GO SEE THEM. This troupe was from the Thalgahagoda Dance Institute sponsored by the Cultural Affairs and National Heritage of Sri Lanka. It was incredible to see the mix in the dance.... could definitely see Indian influence, Eastern Asian influence, and their own "style."

The 3 ladies, albeit a bit young, were different sizes, the men the same way. Didn't seem to matter what "size" the dancers were; they were incredible! Very affirming! And the "biggest" old boy with a potbelly backflipped his way across the stage, and pirouetted blindingly fast. Just shows to go ya!

Now to work on some hand movements....lol

Now, let the fair competition begin and some good, close scrutiny of the performances: The women indeed have taken the lead and run away with it!

Sarina of the Cheetah Girls still has the highest energy.

Marie Osbmond continues to be a very, very wonderful surprise. That ending pose in a full backbend with one leg extended basically straight up! WOW! And, like Sarina, she's full bodied. So, ladies, don't let size stop you in pursuing and enjoying your dance. She also has theatrical interpretation in her blood. Almost any minor flaws can be overlooked due to this quality.

Jane Seymour is the oldest and the most mature dancer. Indeed that Tango SIZZLED! The Tango was probably the most appropriate dance for her for that time due to the passing of her mother the week before. She could really pour her emotions into it and it worked. Let what you're feeling work for you when you select your music.

The lady (sorry, terrible with names righ now) who fell last week, totally, totally recovered with the Tango. THIS is one of the most valuable lessons in performance - never, never let mistakes dampen your spirits. If anything, embrace the mistake to let if fuel you to a better next performance.

Ex-Spice girl - No surprise there. Like Sarina, she has previous stage performance experience to draw on. But, as an older woman, she ROCKED and definately gives young Sarina the run for her money.

The men indeed need to kick it up!
Boxer champion has improved a great deal, but he is still only technically correct and just above just marking the steps in performance. He may very well be the next to go.

Helio just set the bar so high the first two times out, when the performance isn't quite as good, it becomes very, very obvious. However, keep in mind he is the only man who does actually "lead" his dance partner (Julianna) rather than dance the choreography right along with her.

The Millionnaire? I'm ready to see him go. He's having fun and is doing quite well. He also may be the next to go. He could just last one more show.

Soap star has the best chance of really showing great improvement and go all the way right behind Helio.

But, this season unless the tides turn, we may very well see a Female winner!

Last winter, an idea was brought up to create a calendar featuring our big, beautiful, belly-dancer (BBBD) sisters and there was such a huge, positive response that this idea has become a reality!

The creative mindset behind this idea, BBBD Meghan, asked BBBD Kamala Devi to chair this project, and with the help of some very motivated BBBD sisters, we are pleased to announce that we are now accepting applications from other BBBD sisters for the BBBD 2008 Calendar!

Click on the following link for additional information:

Please read all the information carefully and follow the instructions. If you have any questions, please send a Tribe PM to Calendar chairperson Kamala Devi.

The deadline for your application is July 31, 2008.

We are all looking forward to this project and are eager to see how the calendar turns out. We hope that this is successful enough to become an annual calendar.

Thanks everyone!

And while over the last several years, I've improved some things dramatically, I still think I tend to look slouchy. Well at work we had a health fair and a chiropractor examined me and said something about forward head posture (the profile picture looked horrible by the way). I started researching it and also started getting adjusted and oh my the difference. I'm almost 1 inch taller and look so much better and my upper back isn't hurting nearly as much. So for any of you that struggle with posture, sometimes it's more than "chest lifted, shoulders down and back, eyes straight ahead." What's also important is that the ears should be over the shoulders. For me it hurt to do that but the chiro is fixing that.

I really can't explain how you "turn it on" or "getting into the zone" when it comes to performing dance. But, look at his face. He IS Julianne's lover/partner and totally into the dance. Apolo had the same quality. Rumors were even they had actually become lovers, but their response was, if it looked that way, "Then we did our job right" as partnered dancers.

The event is designed for the needs of dancers who would like to incorporate something of flamenco posture, arm carriage, movement, and attitude into their personal styles, and equip themselves to move credibly to music that includes a Spanish flavor. No prior flamenco experience is required. The workshop is designed for the needs of:

* Belly dancers who specialize in American Tribal Style and like to use flamenco posture, hand floreos, and other techniques in their dance
* Belly dancers who specialize in Egyptian style who want to emulate the Andalusian-flavored pieces by Samia Gamal, Tahia Carioca, Mahmoud Reda, and others. It includes dancers who like to use music (such as El Hub Kulu) that contains Andalusian elements
* Flamenco dancers wishing to polish their basic technique under the guidance of a master instructor
* Latin dancers who wish to enhance their dance stylings with flamenco movement
* Ballet, modern dance, and other artists who wish to add some flamenco techniques to their repertoires
* Dancers of any form who wish to perform Gypsy-inspired pieces
* Dancers of any form who wish to use skirt work in their choreographies

In addition to the dance workshops, the event will include a Friday evening lecture by Mariano on the history of Spanish dance, including its ties to the Gypsy trail and North Africa. There will also be a Friday evening dance party at a salsa club, and a Saturday night dance concert of professional dancers drawn from the communities of Latin and Middle Eastern dance artists.

If you like the dance styles of Nourhan Sharif, Dalia Carella, Elena Lentini, Tamalyn Dallal, and others, then you'll appreciate this opportunity to take a workshop from a master instructor who inspired them and contributed to their skills.

Okay, it's that time again! Dancing With The Stars season 5 premiered last night with just the women. I'm going to keep my eyes on Sabrina (Cheetah Girls) and Mark. WOW!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vrDzUCeg8A8

Bruno was right on about her precise footwork! Lyn was correct as well about too much Hip Hop moves. But the Hip Hop moves helped Sabrina relax into the dance. NOW, let's see if she can fully transition into it.

The dancer who lacked any spark was the Sports Illustrated model. It was discovered that she looks great, but she has absolutely no strength for dancing. Their performance is what I call just "walking" through the steps. She and her partner are at the bottom.

Marie Osmond and "Dr. Quinn..." are entertainers and their showmanship helped carry their dance, especially Marie.

Tonight are the men. Let's see what happens. Wayne Newton? This I gotta see! And, they put him with Cheryl.

Floyd, the boxer, got shafted! He only scored 6'es. I believe his performance was very energetic, charismatic, and good showmanship even though he hunched a little and was a little to aggressive. I thin he should have received at least one 7.

The guy to watch is Helio Castroneve, the Latin race car driver. He was nearly perfect. Guess who he's paired up with--Julianne, Apolo's winning partner from the previous season.

Next is the young male model, Albert. He was a little stiff from unfamiliarity. However, his moves were complete and he had great hips and isolations. He has the greatest growth potential. What they danced wasn't too pure of "cha, cha, cha" but it was fun to watch the his style won out for the judges. 7 - 7 - 7

THe oldest guy is Wayne Newton. Very mechanical and basic and he needs to work on arms. He received 6 - 7 - 6 from the judges. Floyd was WAY better than Newton.

No YouTube clips yet. Hopefully tomorrow

I stopped by today and had a nice visit with the lovely young Pakistani couple that operates the store. They even gave Isabella a couple pieces of candy and an animal-shaped calculater she admired. I told them "thank you very much" and that I'd pass on the word about their store opening. The prices are amazing! $14.99 for a belt and bra top decorated with coins, $19.99 for a choli and belt with beads and paillettes. Of course, these are the flimsy Indian costumes that won't hold up to heavy wear ... and anyone who wears more than an "A" cup bra will have to alter the bra tops and cholis to make them wearable. It would probably take sewing them on to your own good bra base to provide enough support. But, hey, for that price, I bought two sets: one green and one orange. And I may go back. How fun!

Just wanted to give anyone interested a heads up I will be starting a Beg. Belly dance class at the studio tomorrow at 6:30 pm I will also be teaching an ATS class starting Wed Sept. 12th. I know severall people told me they were interested in one or the other.
Also been planning for the next seminar I have in March, Fusion Fest 2008. It will be a 3 day event with classes Friday through Sunday March 28,29, and 30th (?, last weekend in March.) My main presenter will be Amy Sigil of Umata , Nominated by Zagareet for best belly dance troop in 2007. I've seen her dance several times and been in a couple of her classes. Her troop was amazing at Tribal Fest this year. I would call her style Urban polynesian. She does some really cool stuff and has her own unique twist to moves you're all familiar with. Plus we will be having 4 other teachers including our own miss moderator Jemira teaching circle veil. I'll give you more info as we finalize things.
I'll have more later gotta run. Ren fair and the store are calling. Classes are at Once in a Blue Moon 1603 W. 39th street about two blocks East of KU med center. You can pm me if you need more info.
