I'm looking to buy a whole sale lot of hip scarves (and maybe zills and veils) to sell to students. Does anyone have any recommended vendors? Thanks!

    Come to Lawrence and talk to Kathe Al-Koudsi ! She imports directly from Cairo and various places.
    She's very supportive of local dance teachers and she will help you in that regard. Nice thing is you get to see the goods.

      Hmm. Kathe is a very congenial person, but when I first started teaching and approached her about carrying her items on consignment, she wasn't willing to do so, even with Siham referring me. Just FYI.

      I do have to say, though, that -- as a teacher -- I much prefer carrying items on consignment rather than buying them outright, even wholesale. That way, if something doesn't sell, I simply return it, and I'm none the poorer.

        And, Kathy is out of the country right now. I think she's expected back in about a month. Give her a call mid April.

        Yet, Inanna, you are asking someone else to foot the bill for your business.

        Someone has to produce or pay for any item that sits on consignment.

        A good wholesale vendor will help you make purchases of items that sell well, not just anything they can sell to you.

          Oh, yes, I understand that completely. But Kathe has been willing in the past to send "goodie boxes" of consignment merchandise to Siham's studio. Siham referred me to Kathe as someone from her studio who had started teaching. And Kathe was somewhat acquainted with me, as I had been a dancer in the community for many years as well as a regular customer.

            I should add that I'm not posting this as a criticism of Kathe. I just wanted to let Gaitri know that Kathe may not be willing to place items on consignment in someone's studio, even if they come with a referral, unless she knows them very, very well.

            And I should add that I was much better acquainted with Judy Cunningham, and that she did generously offer to place items on consignment with me, which generated several hundred dollars in additional sales for her.
