Anyone else interested in local branch of PURE (Public Urban Ritual Experiment) here in Kansas City?
If you're not familiar with PURE, check out their website: www.puredance.org/index.html
Here is the summary from their web site of what the organization is all about:
"PURE is collective of dancers and drummers who take music and dance out into the streets for the purposes of healing and peace. Movements from ancient sacred world traditions including Middle Eastern, Chinese, Romani gypsy, Israeli folk, Flamenco, Indian dance and drumming will be incorporated into the PURE experience.
"Dance and ritual create community, drawing people together both emotionally and physically into a shared sense of the divine. As the community participates, no one is a stranger any longer.
"Dancers and musicians will be travelling down the sidewalks and into subways and public spaces to share their love of dance and music with the public and to pay homage to specific sites.
"Visit pure-dance.tribe.net to participate in online discussions and to see more photos.
"PURE (Public Urban Ritual Experiment) is a sponsored project at "The Field", a not-for-profit, tax exempt, 501(c)(3) organization. Gifts made through that organization are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law."

Re: PURE KC?
07/26I'm in Columbia, but I've been interested in PURE. If there was a chapter in KC, I'd love to try to make it to some events.

Re: PURE KC?
07/26Someone just needs to submit an application to PURE NY, which is the mothership. I called it up onscreen today, and one of the things they ask for is names of people who might participate. I'm just waiting for a few more "me toos," and then I'd be happy to fill out the form and submit it. I'm thinking we can get started with a hafla to have fun and plan the first public event.

Re: PURE KC?
07/26hmmm......sounds interesting. lemme pass it on to the rest of Pavlovs.... -

Re: PURE KC?
09/21Okay, I've started filling out the application form, and I think this should be a joint effort of all those interested locally.
PURE BRANCH PROPOSAL FORM
Name(s) of proposed facilitator(s)*:
And the asterisk refers you to the end of the form, where it says: "*We’ve found that it’s important to have 2 or 3 facilitators for each PURE branch. Everyone has different strengths, and by working together on everything from choreography to outreach to organizing and other administrative tasks, we can fulfill the potential of the group the best way possible. Having more than one facilitator also is important to model the collaborative process of the group, and so facilitators can support each other both creatively and in sharing the workload."
I'm willing to be a facilitator. So who else will join me? We need one or two others before proceding with the rest of the application. -

Re: PURE KC?
09/22Was that a "yes," you'll be a facilitator, Emera? Or a "yes," I'd like to participate? And thanks for spreading the word.

Re: PURE KC?
09/22I put you down under facilitators, and now I need some background info on you for the application.
The next three questions are:
Dance/Music/Leadership Background of each facilitator(s) including a bio, photos, or a website we can visit:
and
Recent performances and other activities of note:
and
Why do you want to be involved in PURE?: -

Re: PURE KC?
09/22I'll share the answers I provided for myself to these questions:
Dance/Music/Leadership Background of each facilitator(s) including a bio, photos, or a website we can visit: www.salaamdance.com and people.tribe.net/inanna
Recent performances and other activities of note: troupe leader of Banat el Shamal, belly dance instructor for North Kansas City School District Community Education (currently on sabbatical), featured performer at Silpada (silver jewelry company) at Kansas City Convention Center, recent performances at Jim Boz workshop show in Sedalia, Mo. and in Kansas City at shows featuring John Compton and Ariellah.
Why do you want to be involved in PURE?: I’m interested in exploring the intersection of social justice and Middle Eastern dance … also, I think PURE could help foster positive interaction amongst members of the local ME dance community … and expand our performance opportunities, which are scarce in this town. Hopefully this might be a way to change the local image of belly dance among the general public.

Re: PURE KC?
09/22It would be good to have a drummer in the mix. In that case, I would need your background information for the application, as well. -

Re: PURE KC?
09/24I'm interested. I just read this post dangit. Damn ren fest grim hrumph! Anything I can do let me know. I didn't even have a chance to read all this yet. I only made it up about half way but I know I want to help. (Maybe this is why I'm so damn busy all the time) I was interested in PURE when I first heard about it a few years ago. Thank you Inanna for doing this. I see cool stuff coming out from your efforts, Layla -

Re: PURE KC?
09/24Our efforts. And welcome to the collective.
I think it's really important to have enough of us involved so that PURE remains joyful and doesn't become a burden on anyone.

Re: PURE KC?
09/22The next line of the application is easy:
Proposed Branch Region (ie PURE NYC, PURE Detroit, etc.): PURE KC -
-
Re: PURE KC?
09/22And I'd appreciate everyone's input on the next line of the application:
What do you plan to do with PURE in your area?: -
-
Re: PURE KC?
09/25Any thoughts from anyone -- not just the facilitators -- for the next line of the application?
"What do you plan to do with PURE in your area?" -
-
Re: PURE KC?
09/25Raise awareness in our community about Middle Eastern Dance. -
-
Re: PURE KC?
09/26Thank you. That was close to my response, so I think we're on the same wavelength. And I'm open to any other ideas until I actually hit the "send" button to submit the application.
Here's the next part of the form:
"Please list at least three possible venues/locations/events you are interested in for PURE, why you think these could be appropriate for PURE, and whom to contact (ie Local police precincts, or park authorities in charge of public spaces). Include contact number/email for at least one of these:
"Possible event dates:"
Personally, I like environmental outdoor stuff in public areas where a lot of people gather. I'm thinking the Nelson Gallery/Plaza, Westport, some of the lovely boulevard areas, the fountains, Union Station on New Year's Eve. Looking up contact authorities is not a problem. But let's brainstorm and come up with a short list of performance venues that interest all or most of us. -

Re: PURE KC?
09/26How bout the parking lot of the Once in a Blue Moon store on the corner of 39th and Wyoming. I just announced that we were having our official public grand opening on Nov 3rd with a Hafla from 8-10 on the Once in a Blue Moon Tribe. I was just coming over here to do the same thing and read this post. So it might be a good time for a PURE performance or just a good time to network with people who might want to join it. I know the Drum KC tribe said they wanted to come. If the weather turns bad we can move upstairs into the studio. Just a thought. -
-
Re: PURE KC?
09/26Hmmm. That's a good thought. Dunno if we can get officially approved as a PURE group by then, but we could at least hand out flyers and promote the idea. Thanks for the suggestions.

Re: PURE KC?
09/26I'm a big fan of Loose Park when the weathers nice, and Westport gets great foot traffic, and there's always the annual Art Fairs (I think they're almost over, but we could start planning for next year) in Westport, the Plaza, and Brookside.

Re: PURE KC?
09/27Welcome! After we get the application submitted and (hopefully) approved, we'll be setting up performance dates and holding regular rehearsal meetings for everyone who wants to participate.

Re: PURE KC?
09/27The next item on the form is:
A"t least two charitable organizations or causes you would like to support as PURE, and their contact info: "
There are so many deserving charities. I'd especially appreciate everyone's input here. Who has a special charity they'd like us to work with, and why?
-
Re: PURE KC?
09/27Sorry, I don't think I'd be available enough to make participation in KC.
That... and I'm really not big on joining groups. But I'll gladly come around if/when I can and help get your word out.

09/28How bout the American Civil Liberties Union or Amnesty International. Theres already a lot of people that donate to the Humane Society like Judy. -

Re: PURE KC?
09/29Excellent suggestions.
And now I"m wondering, are there any good charities out there that assist disabled Iraqi war veterans or families of soldiers overseas? -
-
Re: PURE KC?
09/30The DAV Disabled American Veterans.... although I can say that as someone who works for veterans, I'd check more into the local, rather than national branch. Lotta vets out there homeless and in need in our local areas.
Families are usually pretty well assisted by the military itself. It's the veterans who go without. -

Re: PURE KC?
10/01I've been trying to think of somethihng really really local...you know - help the community your in sort of thing, but I'm not sure what's out there, other than Hope House.
